We always hear
plenty of information about how central heating systems are far more energy
efficient and cheaper to run than electric heaters. However, there are times
when electric heaters work better than central heating radiators. Below, we’re
going to explore these conditions in greater depth.
1.
Gas prices are rising, so it
could be that in the future electric radiators supersede central heating as
reliable sources of energy. This is especially true as we move towards nuclear
power and renewable sources. We’re a fair way off yet, so now is not the right
time to buy your new vertical electric radiators, but in the future, it seems reasonable to assume electric
radiators will become equally as popular as centrally heated ones.
2.
It’s common to find electric
heaters in bathrooms. This is because people tend to want to heat in the
bathroom throughout the year as it reduces the risk of damp. However, they
don’t want to have to switch on the entire central heating system in order to
do this, because that is simply too expensive. A dual fuel radiator (i.e.
centrally heated or electrically heated) works well, or an electric radiator
alone works well too.
3.
In small spaces, such as
utility rooms and toilets, it might make more sense to have a standalone
electric radiator (that you attach to the wall, and not that stands on the
floor). This is because it’s unlikely that these rooms require much heat, and
by having them attached to the central heating, you waste some of that energy.
This happens in our downstairs toilet. We spend 10 minutes a day in there, but
in winter, it’s warmed for 3 or 4 hours. That is an incredible waste. An
electric heater allows us to have enough heat to prevent damp, but not so much
that we’re wasting energy.
